Martinez, Mariners plunder Thunder

Minnesota unbeaten run ends at 14

Forward Saul Martinez became the first player in A-League history to score four goals against the Minnesota Thunder Saturday, leading the visiting Hampton Roads Mariners to a 4-0 victory in front of 2,813 at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

Martinez scored in the 9th minute and added a second-half hat trick as Hampton Roads (11-11-2, 48 points) won its first road game in more than a month. The Minnesota loss, its first at home and worst since falling 4-0 to Montreal in the 1997 season finale, snapped a 14-game unbeaten run for the Thunder (18-2-4, 90 points).

Two of Martinez's goals -- from midfielder Jaymi Bailey in the 64th minute and midfielder Jakob Fenger in the 72nd -- came after Hampton Roads had been reduced to 10 men following the 57th-minute ejection of substitute midfielder Ian Checcio. Martinez notched his fourth goal in the 89th minute after Thunder defender Don Gramenz was ejected for receiving two yellow cards in the 80th and 84th.

"We didn't cover well defensively," said Thunder coach Buzz Lagos. "We thought we could play Martinez one-on-one, but when you've got a player like him you've got to fall back and provide support. We didn't do that."

Minnesota hopes to regroup Sunday in Milwaukee (14-6-1, 68 points), which defeated Hampton Roads 3-2 in overtime Friday. The Rampage, the only other team to defeat Minnesota prior to Saturday, have won 11 straight at home.

Minnesota's offense was silenced for the first time since July 9, when the Thunder tied the Raleigh Capital Express 0-0. The Thunder's best chance came in the 24th minute after forward Johnny Menyongar ran on to a quick free kick by Stoian Mladenov, but Menyongar's 15-yard shot was stuffed by Hampton Roads goalkeeper Emmett Idzahl. Mladenov had a chance of his own in the 25th minute, but his 15-yard shot blazed over the crossbar after a poor clearance.
