Before the season, there was substantial movement of teams between the Pro League, the Premier (amateur) league and the new Select league.

Scoring system for 1996:
3 points for a win, 1 point for a shootout win, 0 points for a shootout loss, 0 points for a loss.

(Note: 1996 standings only include league games)

Before the season, New York/New Jersey, South Carolina, and Sacramento were added. Greensboro became Carolina. Columbus became Ohio. Monterey Bay became California.
